Description :
The Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham at Sringeri established more than twelve centuries ago by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya has an unbroken lineage of illustgrious Acharyas. The Acharyas of the Peetham have been great Tapasvins living their lives in strict accordance to the Sastras. Though endowed with intense dispassion, the Acharyas have undertaken many endeavours with the objective of spreading the message of Sanatana Dharma and conveying the non-dualistic import of the Upanishads, as expounded by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya. One such endeavour has been establishing of branches of the Peetham in holy towns and in place where disciples reside.
By the end of the 19th Century, Bangalore, with its vantage geographic position of being in the centre of South India, and being the closer city to Sringeri, had become a natural choice to function as a major branch of the Peetham. While a branch had started functioning in the city in 19th Century itself, the defining moment was the establishment of a Sringeri Shankara Math in a vast area (now called Shankarapuram) by the 33rd Acharya of the Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Sachinanda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswamiji in 1917. The succeeding Acharya have guided the development of the Math towards functioning as a centre that radiates spirituality and Dharma, as set forth in the scriptures. The present and 36th Acharya, His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji conducted the grand Centenary Celabration of the Mutt on May 14th, 2007.
