Among the eighteen sacred Shakti Peethams of India, each holds immense spiritual significance. The only Shakti Peetham in the state of Telangana is the revered Sri Jogulamba Shakti Peetha in Alampur that also has the ancient temple of Sri Balabrahmeshwara Swamy Temple on the banks of the River Tungabhadra. This ancient town, renowned for its rich Sthala Purana and scriptural importance, is also celebrated as one of the four gateways (Dwaras) to the sacred Srisaila Mahakshetram.
According to Sri Jogulamba temple's sacred tradition, about twelve centuries ago, when Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya was re-establishing Sanatana Dharma across Bharat, he visited this holy shrine and worshipped Goddess Jogulamba. As the Goddess manifested in an extremely fierce and awe-inspiring form, Adi Shankaracharya installed the sacred Sri Chakra Maha Yantra before Her, thereby invoking Her benevolent and tranquil grace.
The temple flourished in the 7th century during the reign of the Badami Chalukyas such as Sri Vikramaditya in the 7th century. When the temple suffered damage owing to the invasion of the Bahmani Sultan in the 14th century, Sri Harihara Raya II of the Vijayanagar empire (established by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Vidyaranya Mahaswamiji) prevented further deterioration of Alampur and the sacred Vigraha of Sri Jogulamba was worshipped in a different location for many centuries. Eventually, the temple has been reconstructed at the current location and the Goddess was re-consecrated.
The Dakshina aamnya sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham, the first and foremost of the four Aamnaya Peethams established by Adi Shankaracharya, has shared an inseparable bond with the Alampur Jogulamba Mahakshetra for centuries. The temple has been guided by the illustrious Jagadgurus of Sringeri Sharada Peetham in matters relating to worship, Agama traditions, and temple administration. Historical records also state that the 35th Jagadguru of Sringeri visited Alampur in 1960 and again in 1965. Likewise, the present Jagadguru, Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peethadheeshwara Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji visited Alampur in 1989.
In 2018, the Uttaradhikari of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji visited the Alampur Shakti Peetham and offered worship to Goddess Jogulamba. Earlier this year, during His Holiness' Vijaya Yatra in March, the Jagadguru once again visited the shrine and offered worship to the Goddess. At the request of the temple authorities and devotees for guidance related to Srichakra worship in the temple, His Holiness graciously resolved to perform the Sri Chakra Maha Yantra Sthira Pratishtha.
With the grace of Goddess Jagadamba and the divine blessings of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, on 2nd July 2026 (Nija Jyeshtha Krishna Dviteeeya), Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji performed the Sri Chakra Maha Yantra Sthira Pratishtha in the Garbha Griha of Sri Jogulamba in the very tradition established by Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya and preserved through the unbroken lineage of the Sringeri Jagadgurus.
Arriving the previous evening at Alampur, the Jagadguru Mahaswamiji performed Ratna Nyasa at the Garbha Griha. He was earlier ceremoniously received at the Telangana border with traditional Mangala Vadyams and Vedic chanting before being escorted to the sacred Shakti Peetha. After offering worship to Goddess Jogulamba, His Holiness reviewed the Vedic rituals already performed, visited the Yagashala, inspected the ritual pavilions and the Sri Chakra, and then commenced the sacred Sri Chandramoulishwara Puja.
Prior to the Pratishtha, the Ritwiks of Sringeri Sharada Peetham carried out all the prescribed Vedic rituals, austerities, and preparatory ceremonies required for the installation. On the morning of July 2, Lalitahoma Poornahuti was performed in the divine presence of the Jagadguru Mahaswamiji. At the auspicious Muhurta, the Jagadguru performed the Sri Chakra Maha Yantra Sthira Pratishtha with elaborate Puja at the sanctum of Alampur Jogulamba Shakti Peetha with great Vedic grandeur. The Jagadguru then performed Puja at Balabrahmeshwara Swami, followed by Padapuja by the temple authorities and philanthropists associated with the Srichakra Pratishtha Kumbhabhisheka. The Jagadguru thereafter blessed the assembled devotees with an elaborate Anugraha Bhashana, explaining the greatness of Sri Jagadamba as the universal Shakti and recalling the service of illustrious rulers such as the Badami Chalukyas, who constructed the temple between the 7th and 8th centuries, and the Vijayanagara Emperors, who renovated and protected it.
Jagadguru Sri Sannidhanam also stated that many developmental activities will take place in the ancient Kshetra sanctified by the divine presence of Sri Jogulamba and the Nava Brahma temples. Devotees deemed this blessing and the Srichakra Pratishtha Kumbhabhisheka to be the commencement of a golden era at the ancient Kshetram.
On this historic and spiritually momentous occasion, the temple staff, Executive Officers, archakas, officials of the Government of Telangana, and the Endowments Department participated with profound devotion and reverence. They not only extended their wholehearted cooperation but also expressed their joy in getting blessed by the Jagadguru and witnessing this rare, sacred and historic event.
