Preserving Heritage, Empowering Education: Sringeri Sharada Peetham Adopts Historic Government School
The Government School in Sringeri, where Jivanmukta Jagadguru Sri Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji pursued his early education during His Purvashrama, has been revitalized from this academic year with the blessings of the Ubhaya Jagadgurus of Sringeri.
The school, which was facing the possibility of closure due to steadily declining student strength, has been adopted and rejuvenated by Sringeri Sharada Peetham under the initiative Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Jnanadhama.
Several facilities have now been introduced, including smart classrooms, a computer lab, free bus service for students from remote areas, spoken English classes, and other academic support systems.
This historic institution, formerly an Anglo-Vernacular School and later a Government Boys’ School, holds a special place in the legacy of Sringeri. Jagadguru Sri Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji studied here during His Purvashrama and left the school in 1904.
The school traces its roots to the system of public instruction established in Mysore State in 1857, which led to the formal classification of Anglo-Vernacular schools.
Reopening Ceremony was celebrated in a festive atmosphere with the participation of students, teachers, officials from Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Block Education Officers, and other prominent members of the local community.
On 20 May 2026, Sri P. A. Murali, Administrator and CEO of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, formally conveyed the Peetham's commitment to the revival of the school by signing the requisite official requests.
